Upskilling Our Workforce in Data and AI: Driving Value and Future-Proofing

At Newark and Sherwood District Council, we’re committed to building a digitally confident workforce that’s ready for the future. As part of our Digital Strategy 2025–2028, we’ve launched an ambitious programme to upskill our existing staff in data and artificial intelligence (AI)—and we’re already seeing the benefits.

Partnering with Multiverse

We’ve teamed up with Multiverse, a leading provider of professional apprenticeships, to deliver high-quality training in data and AI. Multiverse specialises in creating pathways for individuals to gain practical, job-ready skills through structured learning and real-world projects. This partnership ensures our staff receive industry-standard training that aligns with the needs of modern public services.

No Cost to the Taxpayer

One of the most exciting aspects of this initiative is that it comes at no cost to the taxpayer. By leveraging the Apprenticeship Levy, we’re able to fund these programmes without additional public spending. This is a perfect example of how we can innovate responsibly and deliver maximum value for money.

Maximising Our Existing Technology Stack

We’re making full use of the tools we already have through our Microsoft licences. By integrating training with our existing technology stack—such as Microsoft 365 and Azure—we ensure that staff can immediately apply their new skills in the systems they use every day. This approach not only saves money but also accelerates adoption and impact.

Value for Money and Future-Proofing

Investing in our people is the best way to future-proof our organisation. By equipping staff with cutting-edge data and AI skills, we’re preparing for Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) and ensuring we remain agile, efficient, and customer-focused. This is about creating a workforce that can thrive in a digital-first environment.

Joining FutureDotNow

We’ve also signed up to FutureDotNow, a coalition of organisations working together to close the UK’s digital skills gap. FutureDotNow helps businesses and public bodies ensure their teams have the essential digital skills needed for today and tomorrow. By joining this movement, we’re reinforcing our commitment to digital inclusion and continuous learning.

In summary:

  • Upskilling in data and AI through Multiverse
  • Funded via the Apprenticeship Levy—no cost to taxpayers
  • Leveraging our Microsoft technology stack
  • Preparing for LGR and driving value for money

This is more than a training programme—it’s a strategic investment in our people and our future.
